
Softball Sweeps Saint Louis to Finish the Season

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Colonials finished the season on a strong note, sweeping Saint Louis 6-0 in game one and 6-5 in eight innings in game two. The Colonials improve to finish the season at 16-33, 6-14 in Atlantic 10 play.
In game one, the Colonials big inning came in the second, scoring four runs. Junior Amanda Gabriel kept the inning alive with a two-out single, hitting the SLU pitcher in the shin. Freshman Ali Waterman did the same, hitting a single right back to the pitcher. The SLU pitcher gave up back-to-back walks to junior Amanda Holst and senior Carrie Higdon to load the bases and force home a run. Freshman Krissy Mackiewicz singled home Waterman and Holst, while Hidgon advanced to second. Senior Tori Sensi batted in Higdon for the fourth run of the inning.
GW got on the board again in the fifth inning, posting two runs on one hit.
Gabriel got the win throwing seven innings, allowing five hits, walking two and striking out four.
Game two, the Billikens got on the board in the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead and scored two more runs in the fifth to increase their lead, 5-0.
The Colonials broke open the game in the home half of the inning, scoring five runs on six hits.
Freshman Jillian Stanley started off the inning with a single to left. Mackiewicz followed with a double to right to put two in scoring position. Sophomore Katie Terrazas hit behind the runners, allowing Stanley to score before she was recorded as the second out of the inning. Junior Elisa Van Kirk kept the inning going with a single, scoring Mackiewicz. Freshman Lauren Wilson, Gabriel and Holst all got singles to keep the inning going while Freshman Kara Clauss drew a walk. Clauss was the third out as she tried to advance to third from first on Holst's single.
Wilson had a standout second game going 3-for-3, with two singles and a double. She was also hit by a pitch in the second inning.
Freshman Heidi Penna started for the Colonials, throwing five innings, and allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Gabriel got the win, throwing three innings allwing two hits and striking out three.
