
Softball Splits With Towson in Non-Conference Play

TOWSON, MD - The George Washington University softball team took on the Towson Tigers in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday taking game one, 3-2, in nine innings but fell in game two, 10-1.
Towson got on the board first in game one in the third inning, scoring two runs on a double followed by a triple.
Senior Tori Sensi hit a home run to left center to get the Colonials' first run of the game in the top of the fourth.
Junior Amanda Gabriel got on in the top of the fifth with a bunt single advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jordan O'Donnell. Freshman Jamie Yaniga recorded the RBI single up the middle to score Gabriel for the game-tying run.
The game went on to the ninth inning with both teams at two runs apiece. Sophomore Katie Terrazas broke the tie with a home run to left field. Gabriel shut the door on the Tigers, getting a fly out, strike out looking and a strike out swinging to end the game.
Gabriel (9-14) threw all nine innings in the win, allowing six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out eight batters.
In game two, the Colonials got on the board first when junior Elisa Van Kirk scored Sensi on a fielder's choice RBI. It proved to be the only GW run.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the first to score three runs. Towson got back on the board in the fourth with four runs, added a single run in the fifth and scored two more in the sixth to end the the game.
Freshman Heidi Penna (1-6) took to the circle for the Colonials in game two, tossing five and a third innings in the loss. Penna gave up 11 hits, ten earned runs, walked four and struck out four.
The Colonials (14-29, 4-12) are back in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday, playing host to St. Bonaventure at the Mount Vernon Softball field for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
