PENNSAUKEN, NJ - The George Washington women's rowing team accumulated 43 points to place seventh in the nine-team field at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship Saturday on the Cooper River in New Jersey. GW senior Elizabeth Austin was named to the All-Conference first team in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches.
The University of Massachusetts captured its league-record 13th Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship on the Cooper River. The Minutewomen have now won 13 out of 14 A-10 Championships.
UMass (141) beat out defending champion Rhode Island (117) by a 24-point margin. The Minutewomen took the lead after a runner-up finish in the Varsity 8 (6:46.8) and a first-place finish in the third event, Second Varsity 8 (6:58.3). They finished the day with five gold medals and four runner-up results.
Rhode Island (117) finished in second-place and captured its only gold of the day in the Varsity 4 (7:52.1).
Saint Joseph's (110) captured third-place, just seven points off the Rams, while Dayton (102) was fourth for the second straight year. Rounding out the scoring was Temple (78) in fifth, Duquesne (62) in sixth, Fordham (33) finished eighth and La Salle (16) was ninth.
Saint Joseph's captured its first-ever gold medal in the Varsity 8 with a winning time of 6:42.0 to finish third overall for the second straight season. The Hawks also took gold in the Quad (7:20.0).
In addition to the Second Varsity 8 (6:58.3), Massachusetts won gold in the Novice 8 (6:58.5), Novice 4 (8:23.3) and Lightweight 4 (record time 7:51.9). Dayton captured the Second Novice 8 (7:43.8), while Duquesne won the Lightweight 8 (7:24.6).
