HARRISONBURG, VA - George Washington softball freshman Ali Waterman led off the second inning with a triple to left field for the Colonials first hit in the 17-0 loss in five innings against James Madison in bottom half a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday.
The Colonials got its final hit when designated player junior Elisa Van Kirk singled to left field in the top of the fourth. Van Kirk moved up to second on a groundout by Waterman.
Starting pitcher freshman Heidi Penna entered the game as a pinch runner for Van Kirk at second as junior Amanda Holst drew a walk.
Jordyn O'Donnell followed with a groundout behind runners Penna and Holst to advance them each one base, but they were stranded as the third out of the inning came on a freshman Jillian Stanley line out.
JMU's big inning came in the second, where they scored 11 runs and batted around their line-up almost three full times.
Penna (0-1) threw four innings in her first start as a Colonial this season. She allowed all 17 hits and 17 runs (12 earned), walked five and struck out two.
GW (8-15, 1-1) resumes Atlantic 10 play this Sun. Mar. 29 at Fordham in Bronx, NY, with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
