TAMPA, FL - The George Washington University softball team (7-11) upset the South Florida Bulls, 2-1, in eight innings, Saturday at the USF Under Armour Showcase.
"We played outstanding today against South Florida," said head coach Kim Staehle. "Everyone was contributing offensively and made adjustments at the plate."
Starting pitcher Kara Clauss (4-5) was credited with the win when she hit in Ali Waterman, who was pinch running for Katie Terrazas, as part of the international tiebreaker rule. Tori Sensi got on base by an error by the USF shortstop. Clauss hit a line drive up the middle to score Waterman from second.
"Kara definitely pitched her best game so far in her GW career," said Staehle. "She swings hard and makes great contact. We had to have her bat in the line up, especially when she is on the mound for us."
The win is a major highlight for the Colonials because not only did they beat the tournament host team, but also South Florida beat Atlantic 10 rival No. 21/14 Massachusetts 1-0 on the first day of the tournament.
The Colonials play Boston University Sunday in Tampa, FL, at 10 a.m. to conclude the USF Under Armour Showcase before opening the Atlantic 10 portion of their 2009 schedule at Charlotte on Friday, Mar. 20 at 4 p.m. in Charlotte, NC.
