CHAPEL HILL, NC - George Washington fell to 0-4 on the season with a loss to Wichita State (3-5), Sunday, 11-1 in five innings at the Carolina Classic on the campus of University of North Carolina.
Senior Carrie Higdon only lasted one and a third innings in the circle for GW after giving up 10 runs, all earned, to the Shockers.
Freshman Heidi Penna saw action in her first collegiate game in relief, throwing three and two-thirds innings. Penna gave up one earned run and struck out four Shockers' batters.
Junior Amanda Gabriel crossed the plate in the second inning for the only GW run after getting on base after WSU's right fielder dropped a fly ball. Red-shirt junior Elisa Van Kirk walked and in the next at-bat freshman Jordyn O'Donnell hit a ground ball that forced Van Kirk but allowed Gabriel to advance to third. Junior Amanda Holst hit a ground ball that scored Gabriel and advanced O'Donnell one base, who had stolen second earlier in Holst's at-bat.
The Colonials open its home 2009 schedule on Feb. 24 with a double header against UMBC at 1:00 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Softball Field.
