WASHINGTON, DC - The Colonial attack was unmatched Sunday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field as GW put up three goals in the first half to beat Howard University 4-0. Senior Meg Pyle scored her first goal of the season, which turned out to be the game-winner.
GW again peppered the opposing goalie with more than 35 shots. Their hard work and creative play paid off with their second straight 4-0 victory. The scoring started off of a short goal kick that Pyle intercepted and chipped over the goalie putting GW up 1-0.
Just minutes later senior Keara Mehlert scored her second goal of the weekend by surprising the lat Bison defender, stripping her of the ball and sliding the ball into the right side of the net. Misa Eiritz scored the third goal of the half off a pass from Brittany Eger. Eger crossed the ball to the far post and found Eiritz for the tip in. Eiritz leads the team, along with Mehlert, in points (7) and goals (3).
The play slowed down in the second half with the high heat and humidity taking its toll on both teams. Pyle scored her second goal of the game off a cross from senior Stephanie Covello. The goal moves Pyle to 25 on the GW career list with 27.
"It's always great to get home, score goals, earn shutouts and get the wins. I'm proud of the team's performance this weekend" said Head Coach Tanya Vogel. "We got better, learned more about ourselves and have some things to work on as we near conference play. I was extremely impressed with the way the team pushed the pace of the game, even in today's heat and humidity."
The Colonials defenders played superbly only allowing Howard three shots on goal. Goalkeepers Lindsey Rowe and Molly Jensen helped GW to their second shutout of the season.
The GW women's soccer team will take some time off before heading to American University Tuesday, September 23 at 4p.m. The Colonials open the Atlantic 10 season Friday, September 26 at 4 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd. NW) against Fordham University.
