WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington University cross country program has named former Lehigh standout Jennifer Schappert an assistant coach, head coach Brian Beil announced Thursday. A native of North East, MD, Schappert will assist Beil in all aspects of the program with primary emphasis directing the Colonials' recruiting efforts. Schappert replaces former assistant Giannis Doulamis.
"I'm excited to have someone joining the coaching staff who has as much experience and passion for the sport as Jenni," Beil said. "She brings first-hand knowledge of the sport as well as her work ethic and experience as a team leader here to the GW coaching staff, and I'm thrilled to see what the future holds for this program now that she's joined us."
"I am thrilled to join The George Washington University cross country program," Schappert said, "I am looking forward to working with Coach Beil and the student-athletes. I am confident that this season will be one of George Washington's most successful seasons and I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of it."
Schappert, a four-year letterwinner at Lehigh where she served as team captain, was named Lehigh University Graduating Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A three-time team MVP and two-time NCAA Academic All-America selection, Schappert was Lehigh's first cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championship.
The Colonials open the 2008 season, Sunday, August 31, in the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals at 2 p.m.
