PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington softball team shutout Temple, 2-0, for the second straight day, and completed a pivotal Atlantic 10 sweep Saturday afternoon. The Colonials improve to 10-25 overall, and 6-8 in conference play with four A-10 games remaining.
Freshman Katie Terrazas hit her first career home run in the top of the first inning to give GW the 1-0 lead, an advantage they would not give up.
Sophomore Amanda Gabriel was dominant once again, recording her second straight five-complete game shutout. The native of Fullerton, CA did not walk a batter and struck out five.
The Colonials would add another run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly by senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis. Classmate Katie Miller led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a one-out single by Amanda Holst. A walk issued to junior Carrie Higdon loaded the bases for Halkiotis, whose fly ball to center field scored Miller for her team-lead 20th RBI of the season.
Junior Tori Sensi and Holst both collected two-hits apiece, including a double by Holst. Senior Jackie Yaniga also chipped in with a base hit.
Senior Caroline Howe made her second consecutive start at third base but did not make a plate appearance.
GW faces Saint Joseph's tomorrow at 12:00 pm for another key A-10 doubleheader.
