WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team committed seven errors in two games as the Colonials were swept by the Towson University Tigers in a non-conference doubleheader at GW's Mount Vernon Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials were not able to solve Tigers' starter Claire Reitmann-Grout in the opener as they fell, 6-0 in game one. Despite tying the Tigers with 11 base-hit in the nightcap, the Tigers were victorious once again, 6-3.
Reitmann-Grout (9-4) carried a no-hitter through 4.2 innings in the opener before sophomore Amanda Holst took her opposite field for a single. The junior from Half Moon Bay, CA recorded her ninth complete game for the win, allowing just four hits and a walk, while fanning nine.
The Colonials threatened in the sixth to no avail as they left two runners on base. GW also put a runner on in the seventh but were unable to score.
Sophomore hurler Amanda Gabriel (4-9) pitched another complete game in the opener but five errors led to six runs for the Tigers. The native of Fullerton, CA, pitched all seven innings, allowing just four earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out six. Gabriel did not walk a batter in the loss.
The bats woke up for GW in the nightcap but they were unable to score enough runs, leaving 11 runners on base. The Colonials cut the lead to one twice in game two but were not able to pull even.
Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis, who entered the game fourth in the nation in doubles, recorded two two-base knocks, and added a single for three hits and a RBI in the second game. Freshman Katie Terrazas also doubled twice, drew a walk and drove in two runs.
Freshman Ali Pardo pitched well in the loss, giving up four earned runs in six-plus innings of work until she was knocked out of the game by a line drive off the bat of Stefanie Streets. Pardo gave up nine hits and struck out a pair as she fell to 1-3 on the season.
Towson took the early lead with a two-run top of the first inning.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the fourth when GW scored a run on two hits. Senior Katie Miller ripped a double to left, and she was later brought in by a double by Halkiotis. Holst who had walked just before Halkiotis tried to score from first on the play but was thrown out at home.
Both teams added a run in the fifth to make the score 3-2, in favor of the Tigers. Junior Carrie Higdon led off the GW half with a single and advanced to second on an error by the first baseman. A double by Terrazas brought Higdon in, which also meant the end for Towson starting pitcher Brittany Croner, who still picked up the win. The Colonials then loaded the bases with no outs on relief pitcher Shannon Johnston, but were unable to score as Johnston struck out two and received a force out at home.
After Towson extended the lead to three at 5-2 in their half of the sixth, GW answered with another run as Terrazas drove in Gabriel with another double to left. Gabriel had singled through the right side to lead off the inning.
Higdon came into the game after Pardo went down with an injury and allowed two hits and a walk in the seventh inning.
The Colonials put runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh with an error and a single by redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk. Unfortunately a ground ball right to the third baseman at the bag led to a double play, with just Van Kirk at second. Johnston then forced a pop up to end the game.
Halkiotis led GW offensively with three hits in the doubleheader. Terrazas, Higdon, senior Jackie Yaniga and Van Kirk also added two base knocks as Terrazas also doubled twice and drove in two in he twinbill.
The Colonials (5-14, 1-3), winless in their last seven, take on Massachusetts, winners of its last 24 Atlantic 10 conference games, Fri-Sat, April 4-5 at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. First pitch for Friday is at 3:00 pm, while Saturday's contest starts at 12:00 pm.
