ATLANTA, GA - George Washington senior guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence was one of two recipients of the 2008 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Scholarship, the organization announced Thursday.
Lawrence, the 2008 Atlantic 10 Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, and Division III Luther College's Ashley TeKippe are the winners of this year's WBCA Scholarship, which is presented annually to the two women's basketball players in any of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College) who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the sport of women's basketball and to academic excellence. The scholarships enable deserving student-athletes to complete their undergraduate degrees or to begin work on advanced degrees.
An All-Conference Third Team selection this season and second team honoree in 2007, Lawrence is in the Top 15 in the A-10 in scoring (13.2 ppg), steals (1.59 spg), assists (3.97 apg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.60).
Off the court, Lawrence carries a 3.85 grade-point average as a communication and sociology major and was chosen a Third Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine last month. Lawrence also is a finalist for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I women's basketball.
No. 13/12 George Washington (24-5) is the No. 2 seed for the 2008 A-10 Championship, which will begin this Friday, March 7, at Saint Joseph's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse in Philadelphia, PA. The Colonials, who earned a share of their seventh consecutive regular-season league title this year, receive a first-round bye and will play either St. Bonaventure or Rhode Island in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
