WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team fell to Georgetown in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Hoyas' Guy Mason Field.
Down by three in the top of the fourth, the Colonials were finally able to solve Hoyas starting pitcher Jennifer Connell, cutting the lead to one at 3-2. Junior Carrie Higdon, who started in right field for the first time in her career, was plunked by Connell to lead off the inning. Higdon promptly stole second, her team-leading eighth theft on the season. With two outs, fellow junior Tori Sensi drilled a double to right center, which bounced to the wall and allowed Higdon to score from second. A bloop single up the middle by redshirt-sophomore Elisa Van Kirk brought in Higdon from second. A hard single to the wall in left center by senior Katie Miller and an error by the shortstop loaded the bases, but Connell was able to escape without further damage.
After allowing three runs in the first sophomore hurler Amanda Gabriel (4-7) settled down and did not allow a run the rest of the game. The native of Fullerton, CA recorded her ninth complete game and allowed two earned runs on four hits, while striking out six in the loss.
The Colonials attempted to rally in the seventh as they had a runner on first with one out. A sacrifice bunt by Gabriel put the tying run in sophomore Amanda Holst in scoring position with two outs. Unfortunately GW was not able to drive her in.
Connell pitched all seven innings for the Hoyas, in a winning effort, allowing two earned runs on four hits, while striking out nine.
