Women's Soccer Falls to League-Unbeaten Charlotte, 3-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team gave Atlantic 10 leader Charlotte all it could handle for better than half the match, but the 49ers scored three goals in a 25-minute span in the second half to defeat the Colonials, 3-0, on Senior Day at Mount Vernon Field Sunday afternoon.
After 50 minutes of scoreless soccer, Charlotte (11-3-1, 7-0-0 A-10) broke through in the 51st minute on Nikki Labuda Czaplicki's six-yard volley on Whitney Weinraub's cross from the right endline.
GW (7-9-0, 3-5-0 A-10) remained within striking distance until Charlotte tallied goals in the 70th and 76th minutes to put the match out-of-reach. Sam Fried scored her first goal of the season on a scramble in front of the net at the 69:36 mark. Less than six minutes later, Hailey Beam's wide service put Weinraub on a breakaway down the right wing and Oni Bernard raced in from the left to finish Weinraub's cross for the final goal at 75:21.
The Colonials had a pair of solid opportunities to cut into the 49ers' three-goal lead. With 14:26 remaining, senior Erica Wright tracked a loose ball inside the 18-yard box, but sent her attempt wide left. In the 82nd minute, senior Meg Pyle sent a curling shot toward the right upper-90, but goalkeeper Lauren Brown made a leaping, fingertip save and recovered to fall on Wright's rebound attempt to maintain the clean sheet.
Brown and GW freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe each finished with six saves. Charlotte enjoyed a 14-10 shots advantage, including 9-6 in shots on goal, and 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The women's soccer program honored seniors Wright, Pyle, Christy Mazzola, Lauren Kelly, Kerry Philbin, Keara Mehlert and Stephanie Covello with a ceremony prior to their final match at Mount Vernon.
GW is tied for eighth in the A-10 standings with Richmond with nine points. The Colonials face the Spiders Friday at 7:00 pm to begin their regular-season ending three-match road swing.
