DAYTON, OH - Junior Andy Stadler scored his 10th goal of the season, but the George Washington men's soccer team played a man-down for more than 82 minutes and dropped a 3-1 decision at Dayton in Atlantic 10 Conference action Sunday afternoon.
The match, which pitted the fourth (UD) and fifth (GW) ranked teams in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic regional rankings, was marred by a series of early fouls and bookings.
Dayton's (8-2-1, 2-0-0 A-10) Alex Torda spotted the hosts an early 1-0 lead in the second minute with a near-post header goal. Freshman defender Jake Davis was then sent off with a red card in the eighth minute, followed by a pair of yellow cards issued to the Flyers in the ninth and 11th minutes, the latter of which came on a challenge in the 18-yard box and awarded the Colonials a penalty kick.
Stadler converted the penalty kick, his second successful conversion of the season, to bring the Colonials even at 1-1. However, the man-advantage Flyers got the game-winning goal in the 18th minute and added an insurance goal in the 50th.
GW redshirt senior goalkeeper made four saves on 15 shots faced, while Tyler Picard made two stops on 12 shots faced for Dayton. Each team took five corner kicks.
GW (4-4-2, 0-1-1 A-10) hosts a pair of matches at Mount Vernon Field next weekend. The Colonials battle Temple Friday, Oct. 17, at 12:00 pm and Saint Joseph's Sunday, Oct. 19, at 3:00 pm.
