Women's Tennis Opens Season at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The George Washington University women's tennis team began their 2007-2008 campaign at the three-day Maryland Invitational, held over the weekend in College Park, MD.
The highlight for the Colonials came when freshman Jennifer Hirsh (Atlanta, GA/Woodward Academy), playing in her first collegiate tournament, won the championship of the Flight D Singles competition.
Hirsh opened her singles play on Saturday, and defeated Delaware's Laura Honig 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Later that day, in the semi-finals, she downed Ashley Young from the U. of Miami (OH), 7-6(5), 6-1. Then, on Sunday, in the Flight D Singles Final, Hirsh battled past Missouri's Racquel Wagner 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Tournament play opened on Friday with doubles competition. In the Flight B Doubles, senior Kendall Swenson (Shaker Heights, OH/The Laurel School) and freshman Nadia Demidenko (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep) teamed up to win their first round match, 8-6, before falling in the second round, 8-5. Once in the consolation bracket, Swenson-Demidenko advanced all the way to the finals, where they defeated Auburn's Heather Bybee/Dunja Djuranovic, 9-8 (6).
Swenson also advanced all the way to the consolation finals of Flight A Singles competition, but fell to U. of Miami's (OH) Brittany Larson, 6-2, 6-0. Demidenko also made it through to the consolation finals of the Flight B Singles play, where she cruised past Edita Kulichova from Villanova, 6-2, 6-1.
GW's other tournament competitor was junior Madhuri Jha (Oak Brook, IL/U. of Miami Online HS), who advanced to the Flight C Singles Compass Draw Consolation Finals, where she downed Delaware's Ivana Petrich, 6-2, 6-0, and was 2-1 overall in singles matches.
GW continues their fall schedule this weekend, when they participate in the three-day George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA.
The Colonials were 7-9 overall last season and finished ninth at the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship.
