Softball Pummels Coppin State, 14-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington Colonials (22-24) behind four home runs crushed the Coppin State Eagles, 14-0 in five innings on Thursday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. Junior Caroline Howe's solo blast in the first inning ended up the game-winner as senior Kaity Harbour, sophomore Lily Rogers, and freshman Amanda Holst connected with their first career home runs.
Already up by one heading into the second, GW scored four more runs to take a five run lead. Junior Colleen Kegler led off the inning with a double to left center, and was brought in my senior Katy Harrigan who doubled down the left field line. With two outs, Harrigan advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored along with senior Elana Meyers on sophomore Tori Sensi's double to right center. Howe next flied to left field but reached second as the fielder misjudged the ball, allowing Sensi, who was running on anything, to score.
Now up by five in the third, the Colonials cleared their bench, and Rogers delivered a one-out shot to dead center field for her first career home run.
Up 6-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, GW erupted for eight more runs to put the game out of reach. Meyers and junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis started the rally with back-to-back walks. With one out, redshirt-freshman Elisa Van Kirk reached on an error the right fielder to load the bases. Next, junior Hilary King drew another walk to bring in Meyers from third. Next came Holst who hit a towering blast to left field which cleared the wall for a Grand Slam, just the second ever in GW softball history. The runs did not stop there as Rogers singled right after, and was brought in by Harbour's blast over the left field wall. Then, junior Katie Miller singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Meyers then walked for the second time in the inning and Halkiotis reached on another error by the rightfielder allowing Miller to score from second for the final run of the game.
Freshman Amanda Gabriel (13-9) got the win pitching a perfect three innings with seven strikeouts on 35 pitches (29 strikes). The seven strikeouts ties her for the single-season GW record for strikeouts. Gabriel has now also tied former Colonial, Gabby Culp, for the most career wins in Colonials history. Sophomore Carrie Higdon went the final two innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, while striking out five.
GW will host Saint Louis on Saturday, May 5 at 12:00 pm for a doubleheader in the Colonials' final regular season conference games of the season. While currently in seventh place in the Atlantic 10 standings, Saturday's games will be pivotal for the Colonials in order to advance to their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament. The twinbill will also be the last home games for six GW seniors. Lisa Cohen, Kaity Harbour, Katy Harrigan, Jen Hrycyna, Elana Meyers and Janelle Parker will all be honored before the game at approximately 11:20 am at the Mount Vernon Softball Field.
