WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Lisa Cohen made her first career Atlantic 10 start and got the win in game one, as the George Washington Colonials (17-14, 4-6 A10) split their conference doubleheader with the Temple Owls (7-14, 3-3 A10), Saturday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. GW won the first game, 6-1, while falling to the Owls, 6-3, in the second game. With the Colonials' fourth conference win, GW has already surpassed last year's conference win total.
The Owls got on the board first and early in game one with a run in the first, but the Colonials responded for three runs in the second to take a two-run lead. Junior Hilary King and sophomore Lily Rogers led off the second with consecutive singles. Freshman Amanda Holst sacrificed both runners over with a bunt to the third base side. With one out, junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis singled up the middle to score King. Senior Elana Meyers was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for junior Caroline Howe. Howe delivered with a single to left to score Rogers.
Temple then replaced starting pitcher Brianna Dairy with Ashley Smuda.
Sophomore Tori Sensi came up next for the Colonials with still one out and flew out to deep right field to score Halkiotis for the final run of the inning.
GW scored three more runs in the sixth inning all with two outs. Holst started the rally with a single up the middle and Halkiotis then reached on an error, which put runners on second and third. Meyers then doubled to center field scoring both Holst and Halkiotis. Howe and Sensi follwed with consecutive singles with Sensi's hit to left scoring Meyers from third.
Halkiotis, Howe, and Rogers all recorded two hits for the Colonials in game one while Meyers and Sensi both had two RBIs.
Cohen (2-0) earned the win allowing one run on five hits in five plus innings. Junior Jen Hrycyna made her first appearance of the season and pitched a perfect sixth inning while junior Katie Miller shut down the Owls in the seventh.
Dairy (0-2) got the loss for Temple allowing three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Smuda got the no decision allowing two earned runs on five hits in 4.2 innings of relief.
The Colonials fell in game two despite taking the lead twice. GW scored in the first when Meyers touched home after a wild pitch by Dairy. Meyers had singled earlier and advanced to third on a double off the right field wall by Howe.
Temple came right back in the second inning to tie the game before GW scored two more in the fourth. Sensi led off the fourth with a walk and advanced to second on a single by King. Junior Jackie Yaniga then reached on an error to load the bases for sophomore Carrie Higdon. Higdon singled up the middle to score Sensi. Then with two outs, Halkiotis singled to right field to score King.
The Owls erupted for five runs in the sixth inning off freshman Amanda Gabriel and the junior, Miller. Gabriel allowed a two run homer by Adrienne Repsher before getting replaced by Miller. Krystle Metzler blasted a three-run home run to give the Owls a three run lead that the Colonials could not recover from.
Miller (2-7) received the loss for GW allowing two earned runs in two innings of work. Amanda Gabriel got the no-decision despite pitching five innings and allowing just three earned runs. Gabriel's consecutive inning streak without allowing a walk was snapped at 31.2 innings when she allowed a walk in the second inning.
Katie Bordeaux (1-4), who homered in the second inning off Gabriel got the win in relief by pitching 3.1 innings of shutout ball.
The Colonials will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11, when they travel to James Madison for a 3:00 pm doubleheader. GW will be back home next Saturday, April 14, when they take on conference rival, St. Bonaventure, in a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
