WASHINGTON, DC - Zach Borenstein, a senior from Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, NY, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend The George Washington University and run cross country, Colonials Head Coach Brian Beil announced today.
Zach clocked in a sectional-record 15:14.28 in the 5,000m to finish fourth at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC) in March, qualifying him for All-American status. Beil was impressed with Borenstein's performance as it showed that his best running years are still ahead oh him.
Borenstein also placed second in the 3,200m at the state meet in 9:24.19, the fastest in his section this season, and the eighth-fastest in the state.
In what is typically the deepest racing state in the nation, Borenstein placed a section-best 26th out of 253 runners at the 2006 New York State Federation Cross Country Championships, in Bowdoin Park. Zach ended his 2006 cross country season with a 39th-place finish at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional in 16:08.4.
Beil is very excited to see a runner of Zach's caliber sign at GW. "Zach is the kind of runner who will be competing for a top spot on our team from the day he first arrives on campus," said Beil. "Everyone involved with the program is excited to see what Zach can do in a GW uniform over the next four years, myself included," concluded Beil.
Borenstein is the second recruit signed by Beil for the 2007 fall season, and the first men's recruit of the year. In the early signing period, the Colonials inked Jessica Stern of Satellite Beach, FL to a National Letter of Intent. With an impact recruit on each side, the men's and women's cross country teams will most definitely improve on a tenth place finish at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championships.
