DAYTON, OH - The George Washington Colonials (19-20, 6-8 A-10) split their conference doubleheader at Dayton (9-23, 2-9 A-10) on Saturday afternoon. The Colonials won the opener, 5-3, giving GW their most conference wins in a season in program history. The Flyers rallied to win the second game, 6-4. The win in the opening game was Head Coach Kim Staehle's 150th career win.
In the first game, the Colonials jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a bunt single by junior Jackie Yaniga. Junior Colleen Kegler had previously doubled to left field, and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, who attempted to catch Yaniga at first.
The Flyers quickly responded to tie the game in their half of the second but GW came right back with three runs of their own in the third. With one out, Chrysanthi Halkiotis singled to left field, collecting her 100th career base hit. Next up was senior Elana Meyers who singled to centerfield, advancing Kree to second. Junior Caroline Howe followed up with a RBI double to right center that scored Halkiotis from third. Then, with two outs, sophomore Tori Sensi ripped a two-run single up the middle to score Meyers and Howe and giving GW a three-run cushion at 4-1.
Dayton scored two runs in the fourth but that was all they could get off freshman right-hander Amanda Gabriel (11-7) in the opener. Gabriel set new single-season records for the Colonials pitching her 13th complete game and recording her 11th win. The Fullerton, CA native allowed just two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking one in the victory.
The Colonials also scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth when Sensi doubled to score Meyers from second.
Sensi led the Colonials offensively in the first game going 2-3 with three runs batted in. Meyers also had a multi-hit performance for GW, going 2-4 with two runs scored.
The Colonials return home on Tuesday, April 24th for a nonconference doubleheader against St. Francis-PA, at 3:00 pm.
A game two-recap will be posted later!
