COLLEGE PARK, MD - The George Washington Colonials (18-19) dropped their non-conference doubleheader to the Maryland Terrapins (26-17) at the Terrapins' Robert E. Taylor Stadium on Wednesday night. The Terrapins took the opener, 8-1, and the second, 8-0 in five innings.
Junior Caroline Howe drove in the lone Colonials' run of the first game with a double off the glove of leftfielder Devon Williams. The ball ricocheted towards the wall as senior Elana Meyers scored all the way from first. Meyers had reached base with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Terrapins used three home runs off freshman right-hander, Amanda Gabriel (10-7), to power their way to a seven-run victory. Gabriel allowed seven runs (5 earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Lisa Cohen got the final five outs for the Colonials allowing an unearned run on three hits.
Senior Stacey Jennings (9-9) got the win for the Terps with a complete game allowing a run on three hits, while striking out 10.
The Colonials could only muster two hits off sophomore right-hander Meredith Nelles (14-7) in the second game, a double to lead off the game by Halkiotis and an infield single by freshman Amanda Holst.
Sophomore Carrie Higdon (4-3) got the loss for GW allowing six earned runs in three-plus innings of work, while giving up seven hits and a walk. Junior Katie Miller struggled in her inning of relief allowing two earned runs on one hit and a walk.
Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis collected two hits in the doubleheader and is now one hit away from 100 career base hits.
The Colonials return to action tomorrow, April 19, when they travel to Towson for a 3:00 pm doubleheader. GW will be at Dayton for a Atlantic 10 doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 pm. GW returns home Tuesday, April 24th when they host St. Francis-PA in a 3:00 pm doubleheader.
