WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Caroline Howe homered in both games to help the George Washington Colonials (18-17, 5-7 A-10) split their doubleheader with the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (9-11, 2-3 A-10) on Saturday at the Mount Vernon Softball Complex. The Bonnies took the first game, 8-1, while GW won the second game, 4-3.

Howe provided the lone run for the Colonials in the first game with a solo blast to left center in the fourth inning. The Bonnies got to freshman right-hander Amanda Gabriel early and often in the first game but Gabriel got her revenge in the second game.

The Bonnies took the lead early in game two on Gabriel with a run in the first inning. GW responded for all four of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Jackie Yaniga and sophomore Carrie Higdon started the rally with consecutive singles to lead off the inning. Senior Janelle Parker sacrificed them over to put both runners in scoring position with only one out. Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis then doubled to left to bring both runners in to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Howe came up and delivered with her second home run of the day to give GW a 4-1 advantage.

Gabriel (10-6), who went just 2.1 innings in game one for GW, pitched a complete game in the second, allowing just three runs on eight hits, while striking out six and walking none. Christine Keleher started both games for the Bonnies getting the win in the opener, and the loss in game two.

The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, April 18 for a 4:00 pm doubleheader at Maryland. The following day they will travel to Towson for a 3:00 pm doubleheader. On Saturday, April 21, the Colonials will travel once again to take on confer ence rival, Dayton, for a 12:00 pm doubleheader. GW returns home on Tuesday, April 24, to take on Saint Francis-PA, in a 3:00 pm doubleheader.

Notes: The Colonials earned their first win over St. Bonaventure in program history...GW has now won five conference games which ties a season record...Head Coach Kim Staehle is now just one win away from 150 career victories...The Colonials have hit 20 home runs in 2007 which is a new single season record...Chrysanthi Halkiotis is now three hits away from 100 career base hits...Amanda Gabriel has now tied a GW single-season record with 10 wins and 12 complete games...Gabriel broke the Colonials single-season record for innings pitched (120.2).
