WASHINGTON, DC - Juniors Chrysanthi Halkiotis and Jackie Yaniga combined for five hits and three RBIs, to lead the George Washington Colonials (13-12) to a 7-2 win, in the second game of today's doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's (3-13), at GW's Mount Vernon Field. Halkiotis recorded three hits, including a double and a RBI while both of Yaniga's hits drove in runs.
The Colonials got on the board quickly in their half of the first and never trailed in the game. Sophomore Tori Sensi drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to right field that scored junior Caroline Howe who walked earlier in the inning. Sophomore Carrie Higdon, who also started the game at pitcher for GW, came up next and lined a single to left that score senior Nikki Brooks who singled prior to Sensi. Yaniga followed up with a single of her own up the middle to drive in Sensi.
The Mountaineers cut the lead to one in the top of the second off Higdon to make the score 3-2. The Colonials did not allow another base hit all game.
GW then got another run back in the bottom of the third when Yaniga hit a screamer to left center that scored Sensi all the way from first.
The Colonials got some insurance runs off Mountaineer's starter Jamie Fowler in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sensi led off the inning reaching on an error and advanced to second when Lisa Cohen, who came in relief of Higdon, walked. Sensi reached third when junior Colleen Kegler flew out to right field Amy Allison who made a diving catch. Sophomore Lily Rogers then reached on an error to lead the bases for senior Janelle Parker. Parker walked to bring in Sensi and Halkiotis followed with an RBI single to give GW a 6-2 lead. Senior Elana Meyers followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left to score Rogers from third.
Higdon received the win for the Colonials by last four innings while allowing just two runs on three hits. Cohen pitched well in relief by pitching three perfect innings.
Meyers went 0-3 with an RBI and also reached on an error which snapped her 12 game hitting streak.
The Colonials will be back in action Sunday, April 1, when they travel to Charlotte for a tough Atlantic 10 doubleheader at 12:00 pm. Fans can follow the game live on Gametracker at www.GWsports.com.
GW will return to Mount Vernon Field for four conference games in three days when they take on Saint Josephs at 2:00 pm on April 5 and 6. The Colonials will also host Temple on Saturday, April 7, for a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
