FAIRFAX, VA - Senior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) drove in the only run in the first game, and extended her consecutive game hitting streak to 11 games, as the George Washington Colonials (11-12) split their doubleheader with the George Mason Patriots (11-18) on Wednesday at George Mason Field.
In game one, the Colonials got on the board early with an RBI single by senior Elana Meyers for the only run of the game. Junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) led off the game with a single to right field, and advanced to second on an error by right fielder Meghan Hill. Meyers came up next and pulled the first offering, from Patriots right hander Rachel Hastings, to right to score Halkiotis from second.
Colonials right hander Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA) took a perfect game into the fifth inning until Patriots first baseman Kristin Dickel led off the inning with a single to left center. Gabriel pitched five shutout innings, allowing just three hits, all in the fifth, and striking out five to get the win. Sophomore Carrie Higdon (Newburg, MD) came in to replace Gabriel to begin the sixth inning and did not allow a runner on base to get the save.
Hastings pitched well for George Mason going 6.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out two.
Meyers and Halkiotis had two hits apiece for GW while freshman Amanda Holst (Toms River, NJ) also added a hit for the Colonials.
In game two, the Colonials fell 3-1 despite out-hitting the Patriots seven to six.
GW got their only run of the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to right field by Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA). Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) had gotten on base earlier in the inning with a bunt single.
The Colonials also had a great chance to score in the top of the fourth but left the bases loaded.
Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) got the loss for the Colonials in the second game allowing two earned runs in four innings, while striking out three and walking four. Cohen pitched two innings of shutout ball for GW while allowing two hits.
Paige Krystofinski got the win for the Patriots allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings. Arielle Weinkofsky pitched 1.1 innings to get the save.
GW will be back in action Thursday, March 29, when they host Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader at 2:00 pm, at Mount Vernon Field.
