WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) went 4-4 with an RBI and a walk in game two of a doubleheader, but it was not enough to get George Washington University (10-9, 0-2 A-10) a split of the games versus La Salle (5-7, 2-0 A-10) in the opening Atlantic matchup for both teams. The Explorers connected on two home runs off freshman right-hander Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA) in the first game to win 3-1. La Salle scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings in the second game, and managed to hold on late, to take the game 8-6.
The Colonials got on the board first in game one with an RBI single by junior Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA) in the first inning to score junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) from third. Kree singled to lead off the game and advanced to third on a single by Meyers and a throwing error by second baseman Alicia De La Rosa.
The Explorers came right back in their half of the first with a solo home run by Mary Pat Conville. La Salle scored again in the fourth inning with a two-run shot by starting pitcher Laura DeZolt. The Explorers only mustered one other base-hit off Gabriel in the game.
Gabriel got the loss despite allowing just three runs on three hits while striking out seven. DeZolt got the win going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits while striing out six.
GW got on board first in the second game as well with an RBI single by sophomore Tori Sensi (Skillman, NJ) that scored Halkiotis from third. Kree led off game two with a walk and stole second base. Meyers reached on an infield single but did not advance the runner. Both stole another base putting two runners in scoring position for Sensi.
Back came the Explorers with three runs of their own in their half of the inning thanks to another home run by DeZolt who also started game two. After Kelli Curcio hit a two-run homer off junior right-hander Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) in the second inning, junior Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA) came in to replace Miller. Cohen gave up a run later that inning because of a double by Michelle Sullivan to make it a 6-1 game. Gabriel came in to replace Cohen in the third with the bases juiced. Two runners scored to Cohen's credit that inning. Amanda pitched the remainder of the game for the Colonials going 3.2 innings while allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
The Colonials erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to two at 8-6. Senior Janelle Parker (Mount Vernon, NY) got the rally started with a walk. Halkiotis came up next and singled to right, and advanced to third on an error by rightfielder Megan Berry, which also scored Parker all the way from first. Meyers next doubled to left center to score Halkiotis, making it 8-3. Howe then singled putting runners at the corners for Sensi. Sensi singled up the middle making it 8-4.
It was here that DeZolt was replaced by relief pitcher Lea Corcoran. She walked the first batter she faced in Miller to load the bases for Gabriel who was then hit by a pitch to cut the lead to three (8-5). Freshman Amanda Holst (Toms River, NJ) was also walked to make it 8-6 as Corcoran eventually got out of the inning.
Laura Beth McCreesh replaced Corcoran in the fifth, and did not allow another Colonials' run to get the save.
The Colonials will be back in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Fordham for two Atlantic 10 games in two days (Feb. 23-24). The game on the 23rd will begin at 3:30 pm and the 24th at 12:00 pm. GW will travel to George Mason on Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a doubleheader at 2:00 pm. The Colonials will be back home on Thursday, Feb. 29 to take on Mount St. Mary's in a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
