KISSIMMEE, FL - Freshman Amanda Gabriel (Fullerton, CA) pitched a complete game shutout to lead the George Washington Colonials (7-6), to a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State in GW's opener of the second day of the Rebel Spring Games.
Gabriel went seven strong innings allowing just five hits and one walk, while striking out four in her first-career shutout.
Both teams were unable to get anything done offensively until the Colonials scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning. Junior Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) first singled through the left side with two outs to bring up sophomore Tori Sensi (Skillman, NJ). Sensi smacked a double down the left field line which scored Yaniga all the way from first.
Sensi also singled earlier in the game, and went 2-2 in the opener.
The Colonials fell 6-1 in the second game of the day to Rider. The duo of Yaniga and Sensi were also involved in GW's run scoring play in game two. Yaniga led off the inning with a double to the gap in left center and immediately stole third. Sensi then doubled to left again to score Yaniga.
The Colonials are off on Tuesday, March 12 but will face Hartford on Wednesday at 1:00 pm. GW will also look to get revenge on Rider when they face off at 5:00 pm later that day. On Thursday, the Colonials will face NCAA Tournament Qualifier, Mississippi Valley State, and Butler.
GW will return home to face cross-town rival Georgetown in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 18, at 1:00 pm.
