Tonight's Game: GW faces Charlotte tonight for the second time this season and the 16th meeting in the series. GW defeated the 49ers, 76-68, on Jan. 20 in Washington. GW is 5-5 on the road this season while Charlotte is 9-3 at home.
• A GW victory tonight would strengthen its shot at a top-4 seed/first-round bye in the A-10 Tournament.
• GW is coming off a 86-74 victory over La Salle Saturday in Philadelphia for its third straight win following a four-game losing skid. Maureece Rice led all players with 21 points to lead five Colonials in double figures against the Explorers. Both Carl Elliott (16 pts., 11 rebs.) and Dokun Akingbade (11 pts., 12 rebs.) added double-doubles at La Salle. GW converted 52 percent (32-62) from the field and dominated the glass, 45-36, for the second straight game.
• GW has won 25 of its last 30 A-10 games and 44 of its last 53 regular-season games.
• Charlotte has a narrow 3-2 advantage in five previous meetings at Halton Arena.
• Charlotte (13-14, 6-8) is coming off a 81-69 loss to Temple Saturday in Philadelphia. Junior G Leemire Goldwire led four 49ers in double figures with 26 points. Charlotte shot 39 percent (23-59) for the game, but just 7-31 (22.6%) from three-point range. The 49ers were outrebounded, 39-34, by the Owls.
A Closer Look at Charlotte: The 49ers enter tonight's contest stinging from an 81-69 loss to Temple in their last outing Saturday in Philadelphia. The 49ers are led by Oklahoma transfer De'Angelo Alexander's 17.9 ppg (68 threes, 7.2 rpg) and Leemire Goldwire's 14.3 ppg (78 threes). He ranks second in the A-10 in FT shooting at 90% (90-100). E.J. Drayton averages 13.7 ppg and ranks second in the A-10 in rebounding with 8.7 rpg. Charlotte likes to shoot from way downtown and leads the league in three-point FGs made (8.6). The 49ers' 707 three-point attempts is more than double GW's 337 attempts from beyond the arc this season. Charlotte is 9-3 at home this season and 112-31 (.783) all-time at 11-year-old Halton Arena. GW has won in its last two visits to Halton Arena and is 2-3 there against the 49ers.
Next Game: GW returns to Smith center to host Duquesne Saturday, Mar. 3, in the regular-season finale and first meeting with the Dukes this season. The game tips off at 2 p.m. and will be preceeded by `Senior Day' ceremonies honoring GW's three seniors (Carl Elliott, Dokun Akingbade and Regis Koundjia) making their final Smith Center appearances. The game will be broadcast in the Washington area on Washington Post Radio 107.7 FM, 1500 AM and on www.GWsports.com.
