Tonight's Game: GW (2-3) hosts UMES (1-7) for the fourth time in the series which dates back to 1983.
• Both teams limp into tonight's game on losing streaks...GW's at three, and UMES's at six.
• The Hawks are coming off a 59-47 home loss to Delaware State last Saturday. Ed Tyson paced UMES with 14 points. UMES shot just 25.9 percent in the second half.
• GW enters tonight's game aiming to snap a three-game skid after losses to UMBC on Nov. 24, at No. 2/1 UCLA on Nov. 28 and to Auburn in its last outing Sunday at Verizon Center.
• The loss to Auburn snapped GW's four-game winning streak in the BB&T Classic at Verizon Center and dipped GW's record below .500 for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
• GW has won all three previous meetings--all at Smith Center--by an average score of 96-68.
• GW is without starting point guard Travis King, who is sitting out the season with a knee injury.
• GW has won 48 of its last 60 regular-season games and 29 of its last 34 A-10 games.
A Closer Look at UMES: UMES is struggling in the early going under interim head coach Meredith Smith. The Hawks are picked to place 11th in the 11-team MEAC in the preseason coaches' poll announced Oct. 10. The Hawks' 1-7 start is somewhat deceptive as it includes a victory over Stony Brook (coached by former GW assistant, Steve Pikiell) and road losses at VCU, Bradley, Iowa and West Virginia as well as a home loss to Valparaiso. Junior guard Ed Tyson leads the Hawks in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Denzel Jackson is the Hawks' top rebounder with 6.9 rpg. For the season, UMES is shooting 33 percent from the field, averages 53.4 points a game and is outrebounded by its opponents by 8.2 rebounds a game. Colonials fans may remember UMES assistant coach Shawn "Reds" Smith from his playing days at La Salle in the mid-90s.
Next Game: GW travels to Blacksburg, VA, to Virginia Tech on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be telecast live on Fox SportsNet and broadcast live on 3WT Radio 107.7 FM, 1500 AM, 820 AM. Live audio streaming of the game will be available on www.GWsports.com.
