WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Pittsburgh, PA, to compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday, October 13, at 10:00 am. Schenley Park, site of the Invite the last two seasons, also was home to the Atlantic 10 Championships in 2006.
At last year's Invite, junior Audrey Noonan set a GW program record, winning the meet in 18:14.8. Two weeks later on the same course, Noonan set another GW record for the fastest time ever recorded by a Colonial at the Atlantic 10 Championships (18:19.20). The women's team won the meet as two runners ran sub 19-minute times, and four others broke the 20-minute barrier for the five-kilometer (3.1 mile) race. Noonan, as well as seniors Mae Polhemus and Katie Walsh, and sophomores Meaghan Smith, Kelly Wills, and Erica Freebury, set personal records at last year's meet.
The men's team finished fourth of 19 teams at last year's Invite despite being without the services of juniors Chris Pisano and Collin Stevenson. Senior Joe Altenau led the Colonials with a 13th place finish in 26:29.95. Altenau, who is injured, has yet to race this season despite leading the Colonials in the last four meets in 2006. The men also got solid performances from junior Keith Moody, who also broke the 27-minute mark for the eight-kilometer (5 mile) race, as well as sophomores Andrew Coleman and Robbie Lockhart, and seniors Mark Drath and John Woodside.
