WASHINGTON, DC -- Defending Atlantic 10 regular-season champion George Washington University has announced its 2006-07 men's basketball schedule, which includes at least five nationally televised games with the possibility of other regionally televised appearances. The College Sports Television Network (CSTV) and ESPN2 will each air two regular-season GW games with one game on Chicago-based Superstation WGN and HDNet.
Under sixth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season on Nov. 10 at Boston University where Hobbs got his first coaching job under former Colonials coach Mike Jarvis. GW also faces the ACC's Virginia Tech Dec. 3 at Verizon Center as part of a one-day tripleheader in the 12th Annual BB&T Classic. The Colonials will make a pair of trips to the West Coast in 2006-07. First, GW will take on Southern California in the 2006 Wooden Classic at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim on Dec. 9 and return three weeks later to play in the Cable Car Classic, Dec. 28-29, hosted by Santa Clara University. GW will face Air Force Dec. 28 and either Colgate or the host Broncos of Santa Clara Dec. 29. The GW-USC game will air nationally on WGN and via the satellite high-definition outlet, HDNet. GW also will play a pair of nationally televised games on ESPN2. Those games are against Xavier Feb. 10 from Charles E. Smith Athletic Center and Charlotte March 1 at the 49ers' Halton Arena.
The Colonials will play two games against opponents from the 2006 NCAA Tournament field when they face Air Force Dec. 28 and host Xavier Feb. 10. The Colonials also play four games against opponents from the 2006 NIT field: Boston University, Temple and a pair against Saint Joseph's.
After the Atlantic 10 expanded to a 14-team league prior to last season, a new scheduling format was adopted whereby GW will play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, Richmond and Saint Joseph's in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Temple, Duquesne, Xavier, Fordham and St. Bonaventure in addition to the home games with Charlotte, Saint Joseph's and Richmond. GW will travel to Dayton, La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Saint Louis in 2006-07.
The 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament will be held at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall March 7-10.
The defending A-10 regular-season champion Colonials, 27-3 (16-0 A-10) in 2005-06, return one starter in A-10 All-Conference selection Carl Elliott, as well as the A-10's 2006 Sixth Man of the Year, Maureece Rice from last year's historic record-breaking season. They will be joined by four other returning letterwinners, three highly-touted freshmen and Clemson transfer Cheyenne Moore, who has three seasons of eligibility.
