Men's Soccer Falls to Georgetown in Season Opener

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's soccer team led by two goals at halftime, but surrendered five second-half goals to District-foe Georgetown in a 5-2 loss to the Hoyas in the opening match of the DC College Cup on Friday afternoon. The sixth annual event is being held at Reeves Field on the campus of American University.
GW (0-1) jumped to a two-goal first half lead behind a pair of scores from freshman Luke Wildy. The rookie central midfielder caught Georgetown goalkeeper Andrew Keszler out of position with a shot from 35-yards out to give the Colonials a 1-0 advantage in the 20th minute. Freshman Mike Holland played the ball to Wildy from his left back post and the England native did the rest, wheeling and firing a shot to the top part of the net.
Wildy struck again just over five minutes later when he volleyed rookie Andrew Stadler's pinpoint service from the midline over Keszler from just outside the 18-yard box. Wildy was injured on the play and did not return.
Georgetown (1-0) sliced GW's lead in half just 2:40 into the second period when Ricky Schramm broke free across the top of the box and beat Colonials junior goalkeeper Greg Yahr with a low left-footed shot. GW held onto its one goal lead for the next 12 minutes until Hoyas midfielder Daniel Grasso knotted the match with a left-footed blast from 18-yards away that beat Yahr to the lower left corner.
Georgetown netted the game-winner at the 68:52 mark when Mike Glaccum took advantage of a GW defensive miscue near midfield, raced downfield and slotted a hard shot to the upper right corner from the top of the box. Schramm tallied his second goal of the match in the 78th minute to give the Hoyas a two-goal cushion, while Conor Neusel found the net in the 80th minute for the three-goal final margin.
Yahr finished the match with seven saves, while his counterpart, Keszler, posted three for Georgetown. The Hoyas held a 17-11 edge in shots.
The Colonials wrap up play in the DC College Cup on Sunday. GW will face Howard at American's Reeves Field at 2:30 pm.
