WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced that Travis King has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend GW next Fall. King becomes GW's third signee for 2006-07 joining Damian Hollis and Hermann Opoku.
A 6-foot-2, 209-pound point guard from New Haven, CT, King graduated from Hyde Leadership Academy in Hamden, CT, before attending prep school for a year at South Kent School in South Kent, CT. He averaged 18.4 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 6.7 assists as a senior at Hyde Leadership under coach Steve Jefferson.
"Travis is one of the most committed, hardest-working players we have coming in," Hobbs said. "He is a very mature player who has a chance to be a great on-the-ball defender. We're looking for him to really accelerate our transition game."
"GW is inheriting both a quality person and a quality player who is a pleasure to coach," Jefferson said of King. "Travis exudes good character on and off the court. He is skilled and unselfish and he has the ability to see the plays before they develop."
King led Hyde to the conference championship and the Connecticut state semifinal game as a senior. He also was voted the conference Player of the Year following his senior season by the league's coaches. He also garnered first team All-Conference and second team All-State honors as a senior by the New Haven Register newspaper. In his second year at Hyde, King became the first sophomore since Vin Baker to be named to the All-Shoreline Conference first team.
GW (27-3, 16-0 A-10) is coming off the best year in the program's 92-season history. GW became just the fourth team in the 30-year history of the Atlantic 10 to go undefeated in the league. After posting a 26-1 regular-season record that included 18 straight victories, GW won its first-round game in the Atlanta Region over UNC Wilmington prior to losing to overall No. 1 seed Duke in the second round.
