ST. LOUIS, MO - The George Washington University softball team, playing its first true road games of the season, dropped both games of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader at Saint Louis, 8-0 (6) and 6-4, Saturday afternoon at SLU's Billiken Sports Center. Sophomore Cat Belanger (Monterey, CA) and freshman Maryanne Mohan (Portland, OR) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two to lead the Colonials.
With the losses, GW had its four-game winning streak snapped and falls to 18-14 overall, 3-5 in the A-10, while Saint Louis improves to 12-15 overall, 4-2 in conference play.
In game two, trailing 6-0 heading into its final at-bat, GW was able to mount a rally as Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) drew a one-out walk to get things started. Following a single from junior Nikki Brooks (Chillicothe, OH), Belanger drove in Halkiotis with a single to make it 6-1. Junior Elana Meyers followed with an infield single to load the bases and Mohan drove in another run with a single to plate Brooks.
Designated player Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA) was hit by a pitch to send Belanger home and Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA) made it 6-4 with an RBI groundout. But, SLU reliever Erica May regrouped to record her second strikeout in the inning for the final out halting the Colonials' comeback attempt.
The Billikens scored three times in the second to take the early lead and added three more runs in the fifth for the final margin. Sophomore Jen Hrycyna (North Brunswick, NJ) (4-4) tossed a complete game for GW, but was hit with the loss giving up six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts. Aside from Belanger and Mohan's performances at the plate, Meyers went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Billikens' starter Ashley Levan was the story in game one as she held the Colonials to just one hit in 5.0 innings and carried a no-hitter into the fourth. Third baseman Howe singled with two outs in the frame to break up the no-hit bid.
Saint Louis scored five times in the third to take control of the game and chase GW starter Katie Miller (Manteo, NC). The Billikens added a single run in the fifth and scored twice more in the sixth to close out the game.
Miller (5-2) suffered just her second loss of the season as she gave up five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Howe finished 1-for-2 at the plate.
GW returns home for a non-conference doubleheader against crosstown rival George Mason on Wednesday, April 5 at Mount Vernon Softball Field. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
