WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington University junior Elana Meyers (Douglasville, GA) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to clinch the Colonials' 11-3 victory in game two of their Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon against Rhode Island and complete the two-game sweep of the Rams at Mount Vernon Softball Field. GW held on to post a 5-4 win in game one, as Meyers finished 7-for-8 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI in the doubleheader to lead the Colonials.
With the victories, GW improves to 16-12 overall, 3-3 in A-10 play, while URI falls to 7-12 overall, 0-2 in the conference.
In game two, Rhode Island cut into GW's six-run lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 7-3. Needing four runs to end the game in the bottom half of the frame by virtue of the eight-run mercy rule, sophomore Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) got things started with a triple to lead off the inning and Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) drove her home with a single to make it 8-3. Following a strikeout and Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD) being caught stealing, the table was set for Meyers' dramatic home run with two outs and runners on first and third.
The Colonials jumped all over the Rams with three runs in the first, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from sophomore Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA), a two-run blast, and Yaniga. Freshman Maryanne Mohan (Portland, OR) delivered a two-run double in the second to make it 5-1 and GW added single runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
Sophomore Jen Hrycyna (North Brunswick, NJ) earned the complete-game victory to improve to 3-3 on the season. She scattered seven hits in 5.0 innings giving up three runs with one strikeout. Meyers finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, and just a triple short of hitting for the cycle, while Howe and Miller both went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Yaniga also had two hits and two runs scored, and sophomore Colleen Kegler (Yardley, PA) went 1-for-1 with two walks and three runs scored.
The Rams started out strong in the opener, plating three runs in the opening frame highlighted by second baseman Shelby Dorothy's two-run single. GW battled back in the second scoring twice with junior Kaity Harbour (Macomb, MI) and Meyers each collecting RBI singles.
GW had its offense clicking once again in the third, as Halkiotis led off the inning with a walk and lated scored on a single from Howe. Following a strikeout, junior Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) delivered a double to plate Yaniga, who earlier reached on a bunt single, and Howe would later score on a wild pitch to complete the scoring giving the Colonials a 5-3 lead.
Sophomore Gabby Culp (Desoto, TX) relieved GW starter Miller in the fifth and the Rams were able to slice the Colonials' lead in half with a single run to make it 5-4. That would not be Rhode Island's last scoring chance as it had runners in scoring position in the sixth and loaded the bases on Culp in the seventh. But, the Rams stranded five runners over the final two frames and Culp worked her way out of a one-out, bases loaded jam in the seventh to record her first save of the season.
Miller (5-1) went 4.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts to pick up her fifth win of the season. Meyers finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while King went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
The Colonials (16-12, 3-3) return to action when they host James Madison in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Softball Field.
