Manhattan Topples Softball on Day Two of GW Challenge Tournament

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team could not repeat the success it enjoyed on the first day of action at its home tournament as it fell 12-0 to Manhattan in five innings Saturday afternoon during the second day of play at the GW Challange Tournament at the Mount Vernon Softball Field.
The Lady Jaspers took a 1-0 lead in the second courtesy of an RBI single from first baseman Tina Buyea. In the third and fourth innings, Manhattan blew the game open with nine runs between the two frames to win going away.
Catcher Amanda Genovese had a two-run single to highlight the third, coupled with four GW errors, while leftfielder Danielle Just had a two-run double in the fourth as the Lady Jaspers scored five runs on four hits. Manhattan tacked on two more in the fifth with Candice Sheridan and Buyea each collecting RBI's.
GW was held in check by Manhattan starter Jill Medea, who tossed a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts, while the Colonials didn't help themselves committing six errors in the field. Sophomore Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) went 1-for-1 with a double to lead GW. Freshman Kristin Gallant (Calabasas, CA) was hit with the loss in her first collegiate start as she allowed four earned runs in 2.0 innings.
In the first game of the day, Mount St. Mary's edged Army, 2-1, while the Black Knights bounced back in the final game of the day to earn a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Manhattan.
The Colonials (2-1) are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 26, on the final day at the GW Challenge Tournament and will face the winner of the Manhattan-Mount St. Mary's (11 am) game at 1 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Softball Field for the tournament title.
