WASHINGTON, DC - The No. 21/20 George Washington women's basketball team returns to action at the Smith Center on Wednesday at 7:00 pm, playing host to Big East member Villanova in the programs' fourth meeting in the last five seasons.
The Colonials hold a 3-2 edge in the all-time series, with all five encounters coming within the past eight years. GW has won the last two meetings, 62-52 at Smith Center in December 2004 and 68-60 at The Pavilion one year later. The two schools met in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, with the Elite Eight-bound Wildcats defeating GW, 70-57, in a second round game in Norman, OK.
GW continues to climb both national polls, jumping two spots to No. 21 in the Associated Press Top 25 and one spot to No. 20 in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll this week. The AP billing is GW's highest since starting the 2002-03 season at No. 21 and the Coaches' billing is its highest since a 2002-03 preseason No. 16 ranking. GW finished the 2005-06 season ranked 25th in the Coaches' Poll after advancing to the second round in its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance. This year's rankings mark the 14th time in the last 17 seasons that GW has entered a national poll.
In GW's victory over James Madison on Saturday, five players reached double-figures, the third time the team has accomplished the feat in just six games this season. The Colonials also put five in double-digits versus UMBC (11/10) and TCU (11/18). The last time five players went for 10-or-more prior to this season was in a 97-42 drubbing of St. Bonaventure on Jan. 23, 2005 (Simmonds 16, Beck 15, Cole 14, Lawrence 14, Turner 10).
The first 200 students to enter Wednesday's game will receive a voucher for a free ticket to the upcoming BB&T Classic, which can be redeemed at the Smith Center ticket office at halftime. The next 200 students to attend will receive free pizza courtesy of Domino's. The BB&T Classic is a one-day, men's triple-header at the Verizon Center on Dec. 3, beginning with Bucknell and George Mason at 1:30pm, GW and Virginia Tech at 4:00pm, and Notre Dame and Maryland at 6:30pm.
