WASHINGTON, DC - Jessica Stern, a senior from Satellite High School in Satellite Beach, FL, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend The George Washington University and run cross country, Colonials Head Coach Brian Beil announced today.
Stern had a solid senior season for the Scorpions, finishing third in the state finals in November, leading her team to its second straight state championship. In prior weeks, she won the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 3A District 7 Championship in a personal record time of 18:49.65, and the FHSAA 3A Region 4 Championship. Earlier in the season, she set her later-broken personal record of 19:01, while finishing third at the Wickham Park Jamboree.
"What impresses me most about Jessica, aside from the obvious talent she possesses, is her dedication to the sport. When I met her, she struck me as someone who is driven to succeed in every aspect of her life," Beil said.
Stern comes from a highly-acclaimed background of runners as her mother was a state champion at Melbourne High School. Stern has also been joined by her younger siblings, Juliana, a sophomore, and James, a freshman, on the Satellite cross country team the past two seasons. Jessica eventually would like to study pediatric medicine.
"Jessica has both the talent and the mental toughness to become a great runner during her time at George Washington," Beil added. "Everyone involved with the program is excited that Jessica will be joining the Colonials in 2007!"
Stern joins a young Colonials squad which won the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in October, and had its first All-Conference performer since 1996 this past season.
