GW Men's Basketball Holds Open Practice Oct. 26

WASHINGTON, DC -- The two-time defending Atlantic 10 regular-season champion George Washington men's basketball team will open the doors to Charles E. Smith Athletic Center on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 5-6 p.m. for students and fans who want to get a sneak peek at the Colonials. The GW women's basketball team also will hold an open practice on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 1-2 p.m. at Smith Center. Both coaches will participate in a question-and-answer session at their respective practices. Admission is free for both events.
Under sixth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season on the road at Boston University on Nov. 10 before the home opener against Dartmouth on Nov. 14. GW also faces Virginia Tech on Dec. 3 in the 12th Annual BB&T Classic at Verizon Center. The 2006-07 season marks the 100th anniversary of the first GW men's basketball team.
The Colonials, 27-3, 16-0 A-10 in 2005-06, return All-Conference guard Carl Elliott as well as 2006 Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, Maureece Rice, to form one of the country's top backcourt combinations. In addition, Clemson transfer Cheyenne Moore is eligible this season and senior Regis Koundjia returns for his final season.
The GW women return four starters from last year's team that finished 23-9 and made its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The women open the season Nov. 10 against UMBC at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. GW also will host Villanova and Auburn this season and will compete in the BTI Classic against Arizona, TCU and defending national champion Maryland from Nov. 17-19 in College Park, MD.
Coach Joe McKeown's squad is led by All-Conference point guard Kimberly Beck and the 2006 A-10 Sixth Player of the Year, Sarah-Jo Lawrence. Senior Kenan Cole, junior Whitney Allen and the Adair twins, Jessica and Jazmine, also return for the women's team.
