Women's Cross Country Wins Carnegie Mellon Invitational, Men Fourth

Sophomore Audrey Noonan was victorious at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday afternoon to lead the women's cross country team to their first team victory of the season. Junior Joe Altenau led the men for the second consecutive race, leading the Colonials to a fourth place team finish, their highest as the season as well.
Noonan completed the 5k course in a personal record 18:14.80, shaving over a minute from her previous personal best, to earn her first career collegiate victory, in only her second race of the 2006 season. Graduate student Kate Neeper took sixth overall out of 212 runners, her third top ten performance of the year, in 18:59.69. Junior Mae Polhemus took third for the Colonials, clocking in a personal record 19:17.89, good for 14th overall. Next for GW was senior Taylor Leavitt who finished in 30th place at 19:44.36, also a personal record. Rounding out the scorers for the Colonials was freshman Kelly Wills who finished just behind Leavitt in a personal record 19:45.38, 32nd place overall.
Altenau covered the 8K course in 26:29.95, good for 13th place overall out of 220 runners. Senior Daniel Morgan finished second for the Colonials for the second consecutive race in 26:37.64, 17th overall. Sophomore Keith Moody, who has shaved a minute every race this season finished third for the Colonials in 26:57.83, good for 33rd place. A pair of freshman, Andrew Coleman and Robert Lockhart, rounded out the top five for the Colonials. Coleman finished the course in 27:03.40, crossing the line in 39th place. Lockhart had a successful collegiate debut finishing in 48th place overall, clocking in at 27:14.41.
Also running for the women was junior Michelle Concannon who performed in her first race of the season. Concannon finished just behind Wills in 33rd place with a time of 19:47.21. A trio of freshmen, Caitlin Lowery, Meaghan Smith and Erica Freebury also raced for the Colonials and all set personal records. Junior Katie Walsh set a personal record as well, making her the eighth Colonial on the women's team to set a PR on the day.
Juniors John Woodside and Mark Drath also ran for the men. Woodside set a PR in 27:33.11, good for 59th overall. Drath finished just three seconds after Woodside, finishing in 64th place.
The Colonials will not be in action next weekend to rest up for the Atlantic 10 Championships on October 28 at 10:00 a.m. in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by Duquesne.
