KINGSTON, RI -The George Washington University women's soccer team is still without a win in the Atlantic 10 Conference after falling 2-0 today at Rhode Island. It was their second consecutive loss, coming just two days after a 1-0 defeat in their conference opener at Massachusetts.
The start of the match was delayed nearly an hour because of heavy rains in the Rhode Island area. When the game did finally get underway, it was clear that the lingering weather was affecting both teams, as they combined for just seven total shots, and no goals, in the first half.
However, in the second period, the Rams (6-6-0, 2-0-0 A-10) managed to crack the Colonials' defense and netted two goals, both coming from the foot of sophomore Dora Larusdottir. The first came in the 70th minute, when the Iceland-native took a pass from Amy Cochran and blasted a shot past GW keeper Amie Kern, just inside the far post.
The Colonials (7-5-0, 0-2-0 A-10) were nearly able to earn the equalizer in the 83rd minute, but Rams' keeper Amanda Thomas saved a header by sophomore Kerry Philbin. Shortly thereafter, Rhode Island put the game out of reach. In the 86th minute, Larusdottir took a cross from Kassandra Spitler and buried it into the right corner of the goal. They were the first two scores for Larusdottir this season.
The loss dropped GW's record on the road to 3-5-0; they are 4-0 at home. The game today at Rhode Island was the last away game for the Colonials until October 20, when they will travel to Dayton. George Washington begins a four-game home stand on Friday, October 6, when they play host to Richmond. The Spiders just defeated Temple today to earn their first win of the season and are now 1-8-2 (1-1 A-10). That game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
