WASHINGTON, DC - Colonials' freshman center Jessica Adair (Washington, DC/Anacostia) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week the conference has announced. Adair whose, twin sister Jazmine also plays for the Colonials, wins her first conference honor, which is the third weekly award for the Colonials this season.
Jessica Adair had an incredible second half versus Sacramento State on Tuesday, January 3. She was close to a double-double without playing at all in the first half. In 16 minutes, the freshman scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Adair was selected to start the second half of the game despite not playing at all in the first frame. She quickly took control, scoring a game-high 11 points which also set her career-high. She shot 5-6 from the field and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks, both of which came on the same defensive stand. Adair's first field goal of the game put GW ahead for good, 24-23, with 17:20 left to play.
In GW's (8-4, 1-0) Atlantic 10 conference opener against Dayton, Adair's play helped the Colonials retake the lead after a shaky start. Adair made back-to-back buckets to put the Colonials ahead 30-28 for the first time since the opening minute against the Flyers short before halftime.
The Colonials finished their non-conference schedule with a 7-4 record despite playing one of the 10 toughest non-conference schedules in the country. GW played #1 Tennessee, beat then #19 Purdue (now #14), #18 Texas and beat then undefeated Villanova on the road. GW plays at Saint Joseph's (10-3, 2-0) on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. GW returns home on 1/11/06 to host #24/23 Temple at 5:30 p.m.
