EMMITSBURG, MD - The GW men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2005 season Friday evening at the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals held on the Mount campus. Junior Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME) and sophomore Mae Polhemus (Boca Raton, FL) finished 12th and 13th overall, respectively, to highlight the women's race, while junior Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) paced the men's squad with a 14th-place overall showing.
The meet, which included host Mount St. Mary's, American, Loyola, UMBC, Morgan State and GW, featured a dual-scoring format where each squad's top five scoring positions were pitted against each of the five opposing schools. The Colonial women notched a pair scoring victories, while the men walked away with one.
On the women's side, Leavitt finished with a time of 20:22.79, while Polhemus clocked 20:25.11. Freshman Freja Pelich (Concord, NH) crossed the line 18th in 21:15.22, followed by sophomore Katie Walsh (Dover, DE) (21st, 21:21.02), senior Colleen McCauley (Havertown, PA) (24th, 21:29.64) and senior Emily Miletello (Baton Rouge, LA) (35th, 22:45.20).
Morgan picked up right where he left off last year consistently leading the men's squad, this time finishing with a mark of 16:20.40. Freshman Chris Pisano (Toms River, NJ) had a solid debut placing just behind Morgan in 17th at 16:26.24. He was followed across the line by sophomore Joe Altenau (Eastchester, NY), who finished 24th in 16:39.49, while freshman Collin Stevenson (Sumner, WA) (28th, 16:44.30) and junior Jay Vigorita (Warwick, RI) (38th, 17:10.57) rounded out the top five.
GW is back in action in two weeks when it competes at Navy on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. in Annapolis, MD.
