GW Opens 2005 With 1-1 Draw Versus American

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW men's soccer team (0-0-1) began its defense of the Atlantic 10 title with a 1-1 tie against District rival American in the DC College Cup on Friday, Sept. 2 at North Kehoe Field on the campus of Georgetown University. The draw ended American's six-game series winning streak against the Colonials dating back to 1993.
In a match that featured several scoring opportunities for both teams and end-to-end action, GW got on the scoreboard first. In the 74th minute, senior Frank Ambrosio sent a free kick into the box. His serve was headed by junior Arturo Pedroso to sophomore Greg McKay, who flicked the ball over the head of Eagles' keeper Chris Sedlak to put GW on top, 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, American tied the match when Garth Juckem found the back of the net from the top of box with a shot to top right-hand corner of the net at 82:33. The final 7 minutes and 27 seconds of regulation ticked off the clock with neither team able to notch the golden goal and the contest moved to overtime.
The Eagles outshot GW, 7-0, in the two extra frames, but senior goalkeeper Derek Biss made three saves, all in the first extra session, to keep the match squared at one goal apiece.
Biss finished with 12 saves for the Colonials, three shy of his career-best total of 15 set against Duke in 2002. He now has 219 stops for his career, which ranks fifth on GW's career saves list.
Sophomores Joachim Walker and Dillon Colucci each made their first career starts in the game and freshman Jason Peuquet saw time in his first-ever collegiate match.
American oushot the Colonials, 29-11, for the game, including owning a 13-4 advantage in the category in the second half. Juckem paced American with nine shots and Sedlak finished the match with three saves in net.
The tie marked the first time in six years that the Colonials have begun a season with a draw. GW played Albany to a 2-2 tie to begin the 1999 campaign.
The Colonials will meet Howard in their final match of the DC College Cup on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 12:00 p.m. at North Kehoe Field.
