WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University cross country program has signed Collin Stevenson (Sumner, WA) to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Brian Beil announced on Wednesday.
Stevenson, a senior at Sumner High, owns personal bests of 4:26 in the 1600m, 4:28 in the mile, 9:02.08 in the 3000m, 9:25.85 in the 3200m and 15:46 in the 5K.
"In Collin, we're gaining a young man who possesses a tremendous amount of confidence in his ability as well as a great attitude that will help push the rest of the team to new heights," Beil stated. "Collin is coming to our program as part of the most talented duo of freshmen GW has signed in recent years, and I believe he will make an immediate impact in his first year with the team."
Now in the midst of the 2005 track season, Stevenson eclipsed his career-best in the 3200m with a time of 9:25.85 to place fifth at the Pasco Outdoor Invitational in April. Indoors, the two-time track team captain set a personal best in the 3000 meters competing unattached with a mark of 9:02.08 at the University of Washington Indoor Open in February.
During his senior cross country campaign, he recorded a personal-best time of 15:46 in the 5K at the 2004 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships. With that mark, Stevenson finished seventh overall in the Young Men's race out of 153 competitors en route to earning all-america honors and leading his club team to a second-place finish.
"Aside from the great times I expect Collin to be running while he's here at GW, I think the greatest contribution he'll make as a member of this team will be the attitude and confidence he will bring every day to our workouts," Beil said.
In addition, Stevenson served as team captain of the track team as a freshman in 2002 and earned the coaches award.
