PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University cross country team received several solid performances this past weekend at the Penn Invitational on Saturday, April 9, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The meet was the Colonials' second competition of the outdoor season.
On the men's side, sophomore Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) topped his personal-best with a mark of 15:36.80 in the 5000m to finish 14th, while freshman John Woodside (Edmond, OK) and sophomore Ian Hajek (San Diego, CA) clocked respective times of 16:35.06 and 17:26.19.
In the 1500m, freshman Joe Altenau (Eastchester, NY) set a collegiate-best with his time of 4:19.12. The Colonials also had two runners compete in the 800m. Sophomore Jay Vigorita (Warwick, RI) finished in 2:03.42, while senior Alex Kim (Scarsdale, NY) clocked 2:06.19 to round out competition for the GW men.
Highlighting action for the Colonial women was sophomore Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME), who finished with a personal-best mark of 18:55 in the 5000m, a :23 second improvement from her previous best finish. In addition, freshman Katie Walsh (Dover, DE) placed 10th at 19:40.98 and sophomore Meghan Hughes (Hurricane, WV) 12th at 21:03.60.
Freshman Gabrielle Polhemus (Boca Raton, FL) was also in action for the Colonials as she timed 2:26.56 in the 800 meters.
GW returns to the track when it travels to Charlottesville, VA, on Saturday, April 16, for the Lou Onesty Invitational, hosted by Virginia.
