Cross Country Concludes Action at Fred Hardy Invitational

RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington University cross country team had several runners compete on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, at the first annual Fred Hardy Invitational hosted by Richmond at the Fred Hardy Track and Field Facility in the team's first meet of the outdoor season. Freshman Gabrielle Polhemus (Boca Raton, FL) and sophomore Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME) each earned top-15 finishes in their respective races to highlight action for the Colonials.
On Friday in the women's 5000m, Leavitt was the Colonials' top finisher placing 14th in a personal-best 19:17.10, while freshman Katie Walsh (Dover, DE) also established a new career-best with her mark of 19:28.81 to finish 16th. Sophomore Meghan Hughes (Hurricane, WV) placed 21st in a collegiate-best 20:34.57, while classmate Alex Krupnik (McLean, VA) claimed 24th at 23:30.99.
In the men's 5000m, sophomore Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) led the way for GW claiming 16th in a personal-best 15:45.06. Freshman Mark Drath (Los Angeles, CA) also set a collegiate-best with a time of 16:17.14 to take 20th, while sophomore Ian Hajek (San Diego, CA) placed 22nd at 16:26.79. Freshmen Jeff Scranton (South Windsor, CT) and John Woodside (Edmond, OK) finished 25th (16:52.57) and 26th (16:55.36), respectively, to round out GW's contingent in the race.
On Saturday, the Colonials had three runners compete in the men's and women's 800 meters. In the women's race, Polhemus finished 12th in 2:25.01, while on the men's side sophomore Jay Vigorita (Warwick, RI) and senior Alex Kim (Scarsdale, NY) placed 32nd (2:03.40) and 38th (2:07.06), respectively.
GW returns to action in two weeks when it will have its squad split between the Duke Invitational, April 8-9, in Durham, NC, and Penn Invitational, April 9, in Philadelphia.
