CENTREVILLE, VA - On a beautiful Saturday morning at Bull Run Park, the George Washington women's cross country squad placed six runners among the top 10 to win the Eighth Annual GW Invitational with just 24 points. The GW men, led by sophomore Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY) and freshman Christian Woodside (Edmond, OK), finished third overall out of seven teams with 83 points. The team victory for the GW women at its home Invitational is its first since sharing the title with Saint Joseph's in 1997.
"While the winning streak is nice for our women's squad, and every victory is special for them, their focus hasn't changed since day one," head coach Brian Beil said. "Both teams are still geared toward the A-10 Championships on October 30 and everything we accomplish before then is simply a sharpening tool for the championship season."
Joseph Lomong, competing unattached, was the individual winner on the men's side with a time of 25:36 on the 8K course, while Meg Lerch of Towson earned individual gold on the women's side with a mark of 19:21 on the 5K course. Mary Washington was victorious in the men's team standings with a total of 41 points.
On the women's side, senior Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ) was the Colonials' top finisher for the third straight meet as she earned runner-up honors with a time of 19:38. Junior Lindsay Blum (Holland, PA) finished fourth overall in 19:43, while freshman Erynne Jones (Upland, CA) took fifth in 19:45 for her third top-five finish of the season. Senior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA) and freshman Michelle Concannon (LaGrangeville, NY) completed the scoring for the Colonials, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, with identical times of 19:58.
Morgan led the GW men for the third consecutive meet with a 10th-place finish in a season-best 27:27, while Christian Woodside recorded his second straight top-15 showing with a 14th-place finish in a season-best 27:45. Freshman Jeff Scranton (South Windsor, CT) was the Colonials' third-highest finisher at 22nd with a time of 28:26, followed by sophomore Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT) at 28th in 28:49. Freshman Mark Drath (Los Angeles, CA) rounded out the scoring, placing 30th overall in a season-best 28:58.
George Washington returns to action next weekend at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. in Fairfax, VA.
