2004-05 Schedule
WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington University has announced its 2004-05 men's basketball schedule, which includes at least five nationally televised games, plus a minimum of eight regionally televised appearances. The 13 TV games, which includes one televised game in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, represents the most GW men's basketball telecasts since the 1996-97 season.
GW could play as many as 11 games against teams in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, including a first-round match-up against Michigan State in the BB&T Classic Dec. 4 at MCI Center. GW opponents from the 2004 NCAA Tournament field include MSU, Wake Forest, Saint Joseph's, potential games against Maryland and Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), as well as two games each with Dayton, Richmond and Xavier. The Colonials also could play four games against opponents from the 2004 NIT field: George Mason, West Virginia, Rhode Island and Temple.
Under fourth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season Nov. 15 at Winston-Salem, NC, against a Wake Forest squad that returns nearly its entire roster from last year's Sweet 16 team. Wake Forest has been ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN.com's Andy Katz in a preseason Summer Top 50 poll. GW was tabbed No. 37 in the same poll. The winner will face the winner of the American-VCU game on Nov. 18.
GW closes out the 2004 calendar year with a trip to Morgantown, WV, to play West Virginia on Dec. 29.
In Atlantic 10 Conference action, GW will play a home-and-home series against West Division members Dayton, Duquesne, La Salle, Richmond and Xavier. The Colonials also host Fordham, Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's at Smith Center while traveling to Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and Temple.
The Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament will be played at Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena March 9-12. All quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the championship, are scheduled to be televised.
The Colonials, 18-12 in 2003-04, return all five starters, including A-10 All-Conference selection T.J. Thompson (Germantown, MD/Newport School), the A-10's Chris Daniels Most Improved Player of the Year winner, Pops Mensah-Bonsu (London, England), and leading rebounder Mike Hall (Chicago, IL) along with 10 other returning letterwinners as well as highly-touted freshman Maureece Rice (Philadelphia, PA).
