FREDERICKSBURG,PA - The George Washington University Men's and Women's Cross Country teams started what promises to be an excellent season this weekend, March 26 and 27, at Mary Washington College's Battleground Relays.
The women proved their mettle in several events Friday evening, despite a loss in numbers for the spring season. The 3,000m run faced a triple-threat from the GW ladies, as freshman Bridget Skeuse (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata), senior captain Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) have all looked strong coming back from the off-season. Skeuse won not only her first collegiate track event, but her first career track event, finishing the run in 10:50.30, trailed only slightly by Jadwin, who placed third at 10:51.90. Bolton also ran well, finishing fourth with a time of 11:04.90.
Freshman Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) and senior Laura DeLucia (Manchester, NH/Central) both made their collegiate track debuts in the grueling 10,000m run, which hasn't seen a GW female in several years. Leavitt finished second with a time of 47:19.50 and DeLucia followed in third place at 48:09.20. The two look forward to conquering the distance as the season progresses. Always a favorite with the women, the 4x800m relay again proved to be a lively event. Comprised of junior captain Mary Beth McCullough (Nashville, TN/Father Ryan), and sophomores Colleen McCauley (Havertown, PA/Academy of Notre Dame), Emily Miletello (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal), and Olivia Schramm (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), the team placed fourth in a highly competitive field, with a time of 10:27.00.
On Saturday, sophomore Stephanie Johnson, the women's only true sprinter, started her collegiate track career with a 00:13.81 in the 100m dash, despite rainy conditions.
The men also had an excellent showing, entering a 4x800m relay team and three individual 3,000m runners on Friday. The 4x800m relay placed 9th with a time of 8:39.70, and was manned by junior transfer Alex Kim (Scarsdale, NY/Carnegie Mellon), junior Alex Brooket (York, PA/York Suburban), freshman Jay Vigorita (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) and anchor-leg freshman Marco Gonzalez (Anthony, TX/St. Anthony), who was glad to be back on the track after the fall season.
All hailing from the small but great state of Connecticut, freshman Jeffrey Scranton (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor), junior Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and freshman Kyle Sullivan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) made a good start to the season in the 3,000m. Scranton led his teammates, finishing 14th with a time of 10:03.80. Sherman followed only two seconds later, at 10:05.00, barely beating Sullivan, who came in at 10:05.70.
Freshman Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY/Boyle County) braved the meet alone on Saturday afternoon to compete in the 5,000m run. Morgan ran 16:12.65, earning 4th place.
The team looks forward to more stellar performances this weekend at the University of Maryland Invitational.
