EMMITSBURG, MD - The GW Men's and Women's Cross Country teams gave spectators and fans another exciting day of competition this Saturday, April 17th, at the Eric Kloibert Metro Championship meet at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Senior co-captain Emily Jadwin (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led a pack of five women in the 5000m run with a time of 19:13.95 for a 7th place finish. She was closely followed by junior Trina Bolton (Avondale Estates, GA/The Lovett School) who turned in a time of 19:15.96. Freshman Taylor Leavitt (Turner, ME/Leavitt Area) led the second pack of GW ladies for much of the run, breaking away in the end for a final time of 20:48.46. Sophomore Bridget Realmuto (Queens, NY/Cardozo) made her season premier and finished in 22:08.50, followed by senior Laura DeLucia, back from injury, in 22:38.22.
Another group of five lovely GW ladies ran the 1500m. Freshman Bridget Skeuse (Stockton, NJ/Immaculata) turned in a team record time of 4:53.78 for a fourth place finish among a fast field. Junior co-captain Mary Beth McCullough (Nashville, TN/Father Ryan) improved upon her own record, finishing in a personal season best of 5:17.54. Sophomores Olivia Schramm (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), Colleen McCauley (Havertown, PA/Academy of Notre Dame), and Emily Miltello (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) rounded out the group.
Continuing to build GW's reputation for sprinters, Stephanie Johnson again entered the 100m dash, charging into a headwind for a 14.03 second finish.
The men's team performance was capped by the return of senior Darrell Andruski (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) to the 5000m, as well as the premier of sophomore Phil Sherman (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and freshman Jeff Scranton (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) in the 3000m Steeplechase.
Andruski, who has been mentoring the young team since the fall, paced freshman prot?g? Daniel Morgan (Danville, KY/Boyle County) throughout and finished in 4th place at 15:47.53. Morgan stayed with Andruski for much of the run, but was unable to hang on to the rapid pace, though he still turned in a good time of 16:13.11 for 7th place. Kyle Sullivan (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) rounded out the trio with a 17:18.47 finish.
Phil Sherman, always intrigued by the challenge of the 3000m Steeplechase, decided this was the weekend for new adventures, and convinced Jeff Scranton to join in the fun. The grueling event, which throws hurdles and a water barrier into the 3000m run, couldn't hold either man down, as Sherman turned in a good time of 10:26.02 for 5th place and Scranton came in 6th at 10:37.00.
Sophomore Alex Kim (Scarsdale, NY/Carnegie Mellon), normally a relay team member, made his season debut in the open 800m run, joining freshman teammate Jay Vigorita (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim). Both ran strong, well-paced races.
The men's team participation was wrapped up by sophomore Alex Brooket (York, PA/York Suburban), who ran the 400m open for the first time this season, finishing in 54.97 seconds.
The team's season is winding down, but the paces will heat up next Saturday, April 24th, at Dickinson College's Spring Classic in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
