WASHINGTON, DC - The GW women's basketball team (3-3) will play its third straight road contest on Sunday, Dec. 12 when it visits Virginia Commonwealth (2-2) for a 2:00 p.m. tip off at the ALLTEL Pavilion
The Colonials have lost their last two outings, including a 76-70 defeat at BYU on Dec. 6 in most recent outing.
GW assistant coach Tajama Ngongba is very familiar with VCU, having served as a Rams' assistant for two seasons (2002-04). She recruited several players on the team's current roster, including LaKea Jones, Krystal Vaughn and Miranda Smith.
Senior All-America candidate Anna Montañana is averaging 21.0 points in GW's last three games, vaulting her into second place in the A-10 in scoring at 16.3 points per outing. Against BYU, she set new career bests with 25 points and five three-point field goals. Classmate Jessica Simmonds also had her most productive game of the season, notching a personal-best 23 points versus the Cougars. Simmonds is the league's top shot blocker at 1.67 rejections per game. Freshman Kimberly Beck also ranks near the top of the league standings. She is second in the conference in assists per game at 4.5
Virginia Commonwealth has posted victories over Radford and Siena this season, but lost its most recent outing, 76-67, against Richmond on Dec. 5. The Rams are averaging 63.0 points per game and their defense is forcing more than 21 turnovers per contest. Lauren Hogan is the squad's top scorer (12.0 ppg) and rebounder (7.3 rpg).
The Colonials and Rams have met twice before. GW won both matchups, defeating VCU by the score of 65-59 in 1977 and handing the Rams a 78-37 loss in 2002. Both games were played at the Smith Center. Sunday's meeting will be the first time the Colonials have faced the Rams on the road.
